Studio Visit: Show Studio
Led by Nana, I had the honour to visit the studio of world-renowned fashion photographer Nick Knight: Show Studio.

I was first known to Nick Knight and his work in FP4004's article Post. I was very impressed with his images of Alexander McQueen in 1997. Nick Knight likes to look at Man Ray's work and he uses surrealistic ideas in his work. As you can see from his images, he was very good at using post-processing to achieve a sense of surrealism at that time. The birth of digital photography and Photoshop created more possibilities for images. They pushed the boundaries of technology and creativity. Especially with today's internet culture, Nick Knight explores art forms from the internet: artificial intelligence and virtual reality. Therefore, Nick Knight breaks the traditional idea that photography can record the truth and opens a new path for fashion photography. Since I am very interested in fashion photography, I was very excited when I heard that I was going to visit Nick Knight's studio. In fact, I knew about Show Studio before I went to Nick Knight's studio because the make-up artist I interviewed, Du Yilin, worked at Show Studio for a year. But seeing his studio in person made me even more excited. Although I was unfortunately not able to meet Nick Knight in person, his assistant explained a lot of things to us. After hearing his assistant speak, I also learnt what it takes to work as an assistant for such a great photographer. What I didn't realise was that the Show Studio is a very small space, but I think shooting in such a space makes the models feel more secure and allows them to be more relaxed and express their emotions. After Nick Knight's assistant finished speaking, I was in the studio to view the sets and lighting for the upcoming shoot. I found the setups simple and sophisticated. I think this is something I need to learn because during the shoot, I always try to design the picture elements in a very complicated way. However, after the shoot is completed, I feel that the images can look a bit cluttered. Overall, unfortunately I didn't get to meet Nick Knight in person during this studio visit, but I gained a lot from being able to meet his assistants and visit his shooting space.
