Work Experience

During the summer holidays, I followed photographer Wenbo to shoot a lookbook for the Chinese designer brand MOLE'NERATION. During the day, I worked as Wenbo's photography assistant. I think the most important thing I learned from this experience was the use of light. The night before the shoot, Wenbo asked me to prepare for tomorrow's lighting in the studio. I was thinking about how to set up the lights according to the lighting reference: how many lights do I need to use, and Wenbo told me that I can't use a lot of lights at the beginning. I can choose to start with two lights, but if the result is not very good, I can add more lights or change the fittings. I think this is very important because if there are a lot of lights, it will be very difficult to make adjustments later.

Wenbo came to check my lighting before we started shooting the next day. He thought there were some parts of the lighting he still wasn't too satisfied with. So I started to adjust the lighting with him. Because when I was testing the light, I felt that the model's face was particularly dark. So we made up another face light in front of the model. Because there was a light that needed to hit the back wall to create an orange background light. But there was only yellow colour paper in the studio. So Wenbo used Cpatureone to change the yellow of the backlight to orange. This also taught me how to use Captureone, which is widely used in fashion photography. Captureone is widely used in fashion photography because we can see the image on the computer after taking a picture. This makes it easier for the model and the photographer to quickly see what needs to be adjusted in time, and also allows the brand's clients to see the results at any time for easy communication. In addition, I learned from Wenbo's shoots how to motivate the model and how to communicate with the model. Because I often forget to motivate the model during the shoot, which leads to the model's condition not reaching my satisfaction in the final results. Therefore, the photographer needs to praise the model when she expresses her emotions well and also communicate with her when she is not in good condition. After Wenbo's shoot, he asked me to shoot a little bit of footage with the camera. I was pleasantly surprised. Overall, I gained a lot of knowledge about commercial photography from this experience as a photo assistant.
